Image Description and Details: SH2-308, the Dolphin-Head Nebula is an HII region composed of ionized hydrogen. It’s a bubble-like nebula that surrounds a Wolf-Rayet star, the star that formed it. Wolf-Rayet stars are descendants of the most massive stars, and as they near the end of their lives they furiously shed mass resulting in outflowing winds which, in this case, formed the Dolphin-Head Nebula. The star is in the pre-supernova phase of its stellar evolution and will eventually explode in a supernova.
