Dark shapes with bright edges winging their way through dusty NGC 6188 are tens of light-years long. The emission nebula is found near the edge of an otherwise dark and large molecular cloud in the southern constellation Ara, about 4,000 light-years away. Born in that region only a few million years ago, the massive young stars of the embedded Ara OB1 association sculpt the fantastic shapes and power the nebular glow with stellar winds and intense ultraviolet radiation. The recent star formation itself was likely triggered by winds and supernova explosions, from previous generations of massive stars, that swept up and compressed the molecular gas. Joining NGC 6188 on this cosmic canvas, visible toward the lower right, is rare emission nebula NGC 6164, also created by one of the region's massive O-type stars. Similar in appearance to many planetary nebulae, NGC 6164's striking, symmetric gaseous shroud and faint halo surround its bright central star near the bottom edge. Also on the lower left is a small planetary nebula, WRAY 15-1508, as well as a delicate Wolf-Rayet bubble, PCG11.
The impressively wide field of view spans over 3 degrees (six full Moons), corresponding to over 200 light years at the estimated distance of NGC 6188. Natural looking color composite for stars has been included in the false-color Hubble palette which was used to create this gorgeous wide-field image and shows emission from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in red, green, and blue hues.

• NGC6164 and 6165 : Central star HD148937, V (mag) = 6.71, Spectroscopic binary type O6f?p, could be composed by two O-type stars with masses of approximately 34 and 49 M⊙, orbiting in an eccentric (e = 0.75), long-period (P orb ∼ 26 yr) orbit.
• PK336-00.1 is a misclassified PN : it seems to be an ejecta
