Image Description and Details: Orion's Belt is one of the most well known group of stars in the night sky. It's made up of three bright stars - Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. Alnitak and Alnilam are both blue supergiants, located 1,260 and 2,000 lightyears away respectively. Mintaka is a binary star system located about 1,200 light years away.
This image shows the nebulosity around Orion's Belt that cannot be seen with naked eye. The large nebulosity to the right of Alnitak is home to the Horsehead nebula, a dark nebula which resembles the shape of a horse's head against the bright background of glowing as. The Flame nebula, just below Alnitak, glows in Fiery orange and red tones due to ultraviolet light from nearby stars ionizing the surrounding gas.
